Staff: Marcos Canahuí

"Participants will be working at the public elementary school in the Gorrion, near Magdalena.  Students will be working with a teacher at the school, assisting with courses in the following areas; music, Christian morals, and crafts.  Participants will also accompany the staff person to visit homes and help with a women’s literacy program."

Mission:

Help out as a teacher in the school with projects to uncover the potential in the children while dedicating their talents to God.

Vision:

Provide love and affection for the children and build good relations with the teachers at the school and people in the community, while reflecting Christ Jesus.

Site Description:

The work that I am currently engaged in is as a teacher in a public primary school in a small community called El Gorrión, imparting musical formation and Christian morals classes, with handicrafts for each class.  I work with children from kindergarten through sixth grade.  Currently, approximately 100 children attend the school.  Apart from being a teacher in the school, I have the opportunity to share and spend time with the families in the community.

Activities and Experiences of Students in the Site:

The groups of students are the support that is necessary for the preparation of diverse projects like handicrafts and other works for the betterment of the school.  The students also have the opportunity to play and spend time with the children and people in the community.  They do a missionary work within a community with scarce resources, visiting homes and having the opportunity to pray for the needs of the families.

In the time that I have been working with American students, many of them have experienced the love and kindness shown by the people and children in the community.  The bonds of friendship are evident and many return with the purpose of spending more time with the people getting to know them more.  I believe many are transformed, but at the same time they are transforming the people.
